Wanda Mound
14 metres, Nowa Huta. Krak's daughter, who preferred the Vistula to a German.
After Krak's death his daughter Wanda ruled, beautiful and wise. The German prince Rytygier demanded her hand, and when she refused he marched with an army. Wanda defeated him, but to free the country from further wars she threw herself into the Vistula. The mound was raised where the river cast up her body.
The mound stands today in Nowa Huta, next to the steelworks, with a monument on top bearing an eagle designed by Jan Matejko. Like Krakus Mound it is prehistoric, though nobody knows who built it. The two mounds are aligned with each other according to the sunrise, one of the most intriguing puzzles of ancient Kraków.
