Krakus Mound
16 metres, Podgórze. Older than Poland.
Legend says it was raised over the grave of Prince Krak, founder of the city. Excavations in the 1930s found no grave, but they found a bronze ornament from the eighth century, which makes the mound Kraków's oldest monument. Nobody knows who built it: Celts, Slavs, perhaps Avars. Looking from it on 1 May, the Celtic feast of Beltane, you see the sun rise exactly over the Wanda Mound.
Every year on the Tuesday after Easter the Rękawka is held here, Kraków's oldest fair, with a market and displays by warrior re-enactors. From the mound you see Wawel, Nowa Huta and, on a clear day, the Tatra Mountains.
