Piłsudski Mound
35 metres, Sowiniec. The largest of Kraków's mounds, called the Independence Mound.
It was raised between 1934 and 1937 on Sowiniec hill in Wolski Forest after the death of Marshal Józef Piłsudski. Soil from more than three thousand battlefields and places of remembrance around the world was placed in it, including Monte Cassino and Katyń. Under communism the mound was deliberately neglected, grew over, and its name vanished from the maps; it was restored in the 1990s.
Today it is a favourite walking spot: forest, clearings and a view over the whole city. Nearby are Wolski Forest and the zoo. Access from the Salwator terminus or by bus 134 to the zoo, then on foot.
