The fiddler and the golden shoe
A legend from the Salvator church in Zwierzyniec.
In the church of the Most Holy Saviour hangs a painting of Christ crucified in a long robe, a crown and sandals. A poor fiddler came every day and played before it, because he had nothing else to offer. One day Christ let a golden shoe drop from his foot. The fiddler went to sell it, but was accused of theft and sentenced to death. He asked only to play one last time. When he played, Christ dropped the second shoe. The fiddler was set free.
Similar legends are told of the Volto Santo in Lucca, where this type of image probably came from. The Salvator church stands on one of the oldest places of worship in Kraków: tenth-century foundations were found beneath its floor.
